These pictures were taken in Lampedusa between 23 March and 1 April 2011 when thousands of migrants (up to 6000), mostly Tunisians, lived for days on the island without a shelter and in very poor hygienic-sanitary conditions. In those days there was a peak in the migratory flow from the Maghreb as a consequence of the worsening of the socio-economic crisis that affected the whole region and which then culminated in riots, protests and strikes (Arab spring). Although the migratory phenomenon had been foreseen for a long time, the Italian government only after several days prepared a plan for the management of the migratory wave and the evacuation of migrants from the island. Between the end of March and the beginning of April, the migrants were transferred to various centers located throughout Italy and the island returned to normal, awaiting, however, new arrivals from the coasts of North Africa.
